A great golf swing is what every golfer wants to acheive, so if you’re just beginning to golf you want to ensure that you develop a good solid golf swing right from the outset. Golf swing tips for beginners can often be confusing, there are so many out there, some of them more confusing than helpful. This article will reveal to you five quick and easy tips which are guaranteed to actually help you get a great swing.

Swing Tip One; The Importance of a Great Stance

Firstly you want to get a good stance, now the width of your stance is really dictated by the club that you’re using, so here’s a quick guideline;

- For your middle irons your feet should be placed about shoulder width apart.
- For your short irons the stance needs to be a little narrower than shoulder width apart.
- For your long irons and woods your stance should be a little wider than shoulder width apart.

Next you need to ensure that you have your weight distributed correctly, your weight distribution also depends on what club you’re using;

- Short Irons; Have slightly more weight on your front foot (your left foot if you’re right handed).
- Middle Irons; Your weight should be evenly balanced between both feet.
- When you’re using longer clubs like your driver you want to have slightly more weight on your back foot (your right foot if you’re right handed).

Swing Tip Two; The Importance of Great Posture

Now that you have the correct stance you want to remember to keep this stance as you adjust your posture, a great stance and posture combined will do wonders for your swing. Begin by bending forward slightly from the hips and bend your knees slightly. Your knees should be nicely flexed and tension free. When viewed from the side your spine and the clubs shaft should form a 90 degree angle this is the correct angle of the spine and the correct posture.

Tilt your spine to the right (away from your target) and ensure that it’s fairly straight not slouched. Finally ensure that you’re correctly aligned so your feet, shoulders and hips should all be parallel to your imaginary target line (this is the line which runs from your ball to your target). Then ensure that your club face is square to the ball.

Swing Tip Three; Starting the Swing – Back Swing

A good swing starts with a good back swing, a good back swing will put you in a great position to follow through. So to begin your hips and your shoulders are parallel. The back swing begins by rotating the hips and the shoulders this puts the arms and hands into action. It’s important you don’t begin this rotation with the arms.

As you start the rotation back ensure that you bring the club back nice and low to the ground, you want to ensure that you ‘sweep’ it back you do not want to ‘lift it up’. Hinge the wrists as you bring the club back. As you sweep the club back and rotate the body your left arm should remain straight whilst your right arm should begin to bend at the elbow until it forms an almost 90 degree angle.

On the back swing the hips complete their rotation before the shoulders. The shoulders continue their rotation until your back faces the target. As you rotate to the top of the back swing transfer your weight onto the inside of the back foot.

Ensure that you keep your eyes on the ball throughout the entire swing, so at the top of the back swing you should be able to see just over your shoulder. At the top of the back swing 75% of your weight should be on the back foot.

 Swing Tip Four; Downswing

The downswing should begin with the rotation of the lower body – the hips first then the shoulders. This slight separation between your upper and lower body as you start the downswing builds torque in the transition between the back swing and the downswing, which really helps to give your swing an extra power boost.

Your shoulders bring the arms and hands into action, you want to let the arms swing very naturally through the downswing, the club should follow through on the same path in which you took it back in the back swing. Ensure that you unhinge your wrists right from the start of the downswing, this ensures that you get maximum power in the swing.

So as I said before the downswing begins with the rotation of the hips but it also begins by pushing your weight from your right leg to your left leg, back towards your target. As you rotate the body back through you should really focus on transferring your weight back towards your target. To do this you should feel your right knee swing in towards your left leg as you swing back through.

 Swing Tip Five; Impact

Continue to rotate the body right through into impact. Ensure that your club head strikes the ball as it descends in the downswing, don’t try to lift the ball with the clubhead. All that power built up in the swing is directed towards your ball through impact.

So let the hips lead the shoulders and arms right up into impact, continue rotation until the finish and your belly button should be facing the target. At impact 75% of your weight should be on your front foot.

 Practice…

Now follow these golf swing tips for beginners, put them into action and most importantly practice your swing as much as possible!

Golf clubs are always willing to give some useful suggestions for golf players. Going on the following words, you will be given a surprise.

Paul Slater holds the world record of 884 yards for the longest tee shot in golf. He tried to improved his record when the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign launched its Four Course Challenge at London City Airport at the weekend but managed a mere 598 yards in cold, windy conditions!

We asked Paul for his top tips for average golfers to hit the ball further and he responded that too many player try to launch their efforts on the backswing:

“I’ve watched hundreds of amateurs trying to hit a ball further and most will try to speed up everything, especially on their backswing.

“Doing this, actually slows the clubhead down at impact. Your focus should always be on timing and rhythm and creating as wide an arc as possible.

“Watch the professional golfers on your TV or at an event and you’ll notice they all appear quite slow in their swing movements, yet they all hit the ball immense distances.”

So what’s his best tip for longer tee shots?

“My best tip is to suggest that next time you practice, try to keep your backswing, wide and slow and try to relax, keeping your arms tension free.  Do that successfully and then watch how much further the ball will fly when you focus on your downswing and a full follow through.”

For his record attempt, Paul Slater used a Cobra Pro D X-Speed driver with 5.5 degrees of loft and fitted with a UST V2 LD4 shaft. He used Pinnacle Gold golf balls

Golf Wedge Tips

The best way to lower your handicap quickly is to focus on your short game, and the fastest way to reduce your number of putts per round is to improve your pitch and chip shots.  Mastering your golf wedges is the best and fastest way to lower your handicap.  Most average golfers are fearful of their wedges and are not comfortable using them around the green.  The fear is ingrained after many balls skip across the green or are “chili-dipped” 20 yards short.  I will provide some simple golf wedge tips that will hopefully take some of the fear out of those wedges.

Variety of Wedges

It is important to have at least two or three different wedges in your bag to give you the most options for any given shot.  By having different wedge options you will be able to choose the easiest shot for the best results.  I like to carry 52, 56, and 60 degree wedges which gives me various shot options depending on the distance needed, the lie of the ball, and how much green I have to work with.  It’s far more important to have 3 or 4 wedges compared to 3 or 4 woods.

30-Yard Pitch Shot

The 30-yard pitch is an invaluable golf wedge tip that you should practice and be comfortable with.  A good 30-yard pitch can help you save par or give you a chance for birdie, and it’s invaluable when an obstacle like a bunker or water hazard stands between you and the green.  The first step is to use the right wedge.  56 degree if you have some green to work with or a 60 degree if you need to fly the ball to the hole.  The setup begins by keeping the ball back in your stance with your feet closer together and more weight on your lead foot (left foot for righties).  Commit to the shot!  It’s important to know exactly where you want the ball to land, pick a precise spot, keeping in mind how far you want it to roll once it lands on the green.  Make a consistent, rhythmical, swing. The back swing should be even in tempo with the finish.  The most common error average players make is decelerating the swing; a quick back swing followed by a sudden stop once contact is made with the ball.

Green-Side Sand Trap

Sand Traps should be fun, but typically they are not.  An article dealing with golf wedge tips wouldn’t be complete without talking about the beloved bunker.  Most average golfers make sand trap shots more difficult than they have to be.  Again, it’s important to have the right wedge, most of the time a sand wedge or 60 degree wedge is the best option.  Setup to the ball with a slightly open stance, your feet should be aligned left of the hole, 2-3 feet. The ball should be back in your stance, off of your back heel (right foot for righties), with your weight shifted to your lead foot (left foot for righties).  Some golf-wedge tips suggest you should dig your feet into the sand, which can help you get under the ball, but don’t get too carried away with it.  Dig too deep and you won’t get the ball out of the bunker because the club will bury into the sand.  Maintain a long consistent swing with an even tempo.  Focus on hitting a spot in the sand about 2-3 inches behind the ball.  The sand will push the ball out of the bunker and toward the hole.  It’s the only shot in golf where you don’t actually strike the golf ball.

Green-Side Rough

Essentially you can play a green-side rough shot with the same fundamentals as the green-side bunker.  If your ball is in a 4-inch rough you will need to apply the same technique; open the clubface, open your stance and aim slightly left of the hole, use the bounce (back of the club) of the club to get underneath the ball, and swing with a smooth even tempo.  Don’t stop your swing at the ball, the follow through should mirror the back swing.

Practice, Practice, Practice

I hope some of these golf wedge tips were helpful to you.  The benefits will come to you if you practice these shots often.  Get comfortable with your wedges and you will definitely see your handicap go lower.  If you have any other great golf wedge tips visit my website and drop me a line.

As you begin to learn the fundamentals of the golf game, here are quick golf tips that cover the basics of the golf swing including ball position, backswing golf tips and downswing golf tips. Practice these golf tips regularly and you will be ready to play your best golf!

Ball Position Golf Tips

To hit crisp iron shots, you should hit downward on the golf ball. To achieve the downward blow, the golf ball should be positioned correctly in relation to your stance. So, to hit solid iron shots, position your body so that the golf ball is:

1. In the center of your stance for shorter irons including 8, 9 irons and wedges
2. One golf ball forward from center for mid irons including 5, 6, and 7 irons
3. Two golf balls forward from center for fairway clubs including 3 and 5 woods and hybrid clubs
4. Three golf balls forward from center for your driver

Full Swing Golf Tips

Backswing

When executing your backswing, rotate the club, arms and body back together while shifting your weight to the inside of right leg. Hinge your wrists as they approach waist level. At the top of the backswing, ensure your left arm is straight, most of your body weight is on the inside of your right leg and that your right knee is flexed.  Your shoulders should be rotated up to 90 degrees at the top of your backswing while your hips are rotated 30 to 45 degrees.

Downswing

When you initiate the downswing, shift your weight to the left.  Your hips, arms and shoulders will naturally follow this weight shift and unwind to the impact position. At impact, check that your head is behind the ball.  Continue turning your body after impact so that your arms and club extend toward the target after impact (release position).

To ensure proper body movement throughout the golf swing, here are a few quick golf tips to check at the finish position of your golf swing:

1. Belt buckle faces your target
2. Club is wrapped around your shoulder with club head directed toward target line.
3. 90% of your weight is on left leg
4. Right foot upright on toes.
