Have you ever wondered why sometimes the more you don’t want something to happen the more likely it is that it does happen? That’s kind of a strange co-incidence don’t you think? Let’s examine what happens when you try to not do something…

Try as hard as you can right now to NOT think about a giraffe.

What are you thinking about? Aha – a giraffe! Now ask yourself did you see the word “giraffe” or did you see it’s rather long neck?

So what does this tell us about how our minds work? Firstly, in order to comprehend what it is we are trying not to think about we have to focus on what that thing is. Secondly, we tend to picture it rather than think about the letters of the word; an image of it comes into your minds eye. And this makes sense if you think about how you learnt as a child; You’d have a picture book with the words next to the picture, and that’s how you’d learn that that particular word represented that particular picture. The picture has more impact – the picture comes first.

What we can learn from this is that where there is a conflict between your will power and your imagination, your imagination wins.

If you haven’t quite appreciated as yet the extreme power of your imagination, think of the times that you have stood on the tee thinking “don’t go in the bunker” and hey, presto – amazingly that’s exactly where the ball ended up. Your mind is EXQUISITELY TALENTED. Unless you are a pretty low handicap player, for most of us to aim the ball into a bunker that’s 180 yards away and 2 yards in width, we would probably have to have a few attempts before succeeding; and yet, just by THINKING “don’t go in there”, it does. Wow! Isn’t that amazing?

Once again, what can we learn from this? As you think “Don’t” your mind has to comprehend “don’t what?” and will PICTURE whatever the object it. And a “picture is worth a thousand words” to quote a well-known, and insightful, phrase. What we golfers need to do is simply to use this knowledge to our advantage. We can choose to PICTURE exactly where we want the ball to go. Just picture the exact line that you want the ball to travel along, picture the trajectory, picture the ball landing and rolling and coming to a stop. Your mind understands and responds to pictures automatically, instinctively and EASILY.

Sometime soon, why not get out to the chipping area with a friend? Take it in turns to ask your friend where they are going to land the ball, and put a tee there to mark the precise spot. Then ask them how high the ball will travel; hold your arm out to indicate the exact height. This is a quick way of assisting someone to visualise their shot. Then move away and allow them to execute the shot they have pictured. It’s amazing how your visualisation skills will improve as you do this, and in this way you are clearly telling the golf ball what to do – you are chipping with clear intent. The result, quite logically, is that the ball is far more likely to go where you want it to.

Once you have done this, you can go home, put your feet up, get nice and cosy and simply picture the process all over again. You can have a lovely relax on the sofa, simply visualising all those fantastic chips, over and over and over again, thereby strengthening those neural pathways in your brain, creating an expectation that those great chips will come off as you want them to.

You can also use this type of visualisation to become more creative in your short game, visualising different shots, both high and low. Remember, everything in life starts with a thought, including every shot you make in golf. You have to think about it, plan it, visualise it and then it has the best chance of doing what you what it to do. If you don’t tell the golf ball clearly where you want it to go, it will go wherever it pleases…and probably won’t please you!

Here’s a challenge for habitual slicers, which covers, as you probably know, 70% of the golfing population. Be honest now and really think about what thoughts run through your mind when you’re standing on the tee and there’s trees all the way down the right of the fairway. Are you thinking “OK, theres a great spot in the middle of the fairway and I’m going to aim at that particular point”; or do you think “Oh **** trees on the right, I’d better aim further left”? And as you aim further left, do you pick an exact target to aim at, or do you simply think “further left”? And as you aim “further left” do you find that you come across the ball more and slice the ball even further to the right?! Because if you did that your golf ball probably did exactly what you told it to do…Even as you were thinking “further left” were you not PICTURING those damn trees down the right?!

So, the challenge to slicers is to go out there and decide on your exact target and picture the ball’s flight path and trajectory as it flies to that target and then just hit the ball. And if you really want to go for it, set the ball out to the RIGHT and draw it in to the centre, firstly in your imagination, and then notice how your mind really does tell the ball where to go. Your mind is far more important than your technique…try it and see for yourself. (If you think about it, what I’m saying is also very logical – if by intentionally setting it out left, you unintentionally hit a slice, then is it possible that by intentionally setting it out right, you might unintentionally hit a draw?)

And when you are bot on the golf course, you can be visualising your routine and your shots. Whatever you time you vividly image a shot your brain will record it as it it really happened, and so you can strengthen your mind easily in this way. What can be more simple than this type of practice? Practice, of the right things, really does make perfect. The beauty of visualisation practice is that EVERY shot is perfect and so your brain is recording these perfect shots all of the time whilst you visualise. If you were partaking of actual practice, some shots would be great whilst others might not be so accurate – and your brain is recording every shot. This explains why numerous studies have shown that visualisation practice is MORE effective than actual practice.

So if you want to get a HEAD start to your golfing season, get visualising. You don’t have to spend hours at it. Research has shown that just spending 1-3 minutes visualising at a time is optimal for this type of effective practice. To put it in perspective, that’s less time than smokers spend on smoking a cigarette! You could be visualising whilst smoking or even while brushing your teeth.

If you suffer from the most dreaded shot in golf, the slice, then fear not. A slice is when the ball bends in the air from left to right for a right handed golfer. If you are constantly slicing the ball do you know that you are giving away distance on your shots, as well as playing from some strange places around the course. Tip 1: Check your grip

One of the most common things seen on the golf course is players holding the golf club in a very tight grip. This causes tension in the arms and shoulders and will be an erratic movements which often leads to the club face being delivered to the ball to an open position. You must strike the ball with the club face square as this will dramatically affect the ball’s direction in the air.

You can fix your slice and hit arrow straight shots with this quick tip. Turn your hands around the grip slightly in a clockwise direction to square the clubface at impact. For a right-handed player, you should see 2-3 knuckles of thes left hand when in position at address. A  ‘V’  should be formed by thumb and forefinger directed to the right shoulder, if you’re right-handed.

Tip 2: Alignment

Your feet, knees, hips and shoulders should all be aligned parallel to the target. Before you swing the club do make sure that you have to set up square and parallel to the ball oto target line. The position can feel uncomfortable for a short period of time until you get used to it, especially if you’ve played for some time using the wrong method. A session on the practice ground will feel make the position feel more natural quickly.

Tip 3: Setup

A solid foundation to base your swing on is crucial to achieve maximum performance and accuracy. The stance width may vary with the club you use, with an iron, feet should be shoulder width apart. A little wider for the woods and narrower with the short irons. Your setup will now allow you to swing the club and uncoil your body on the downswing and release the full power, while maintaining full control and balance of your swing.

Tip 4: Your Swing

Swinging the club on the wrong swing path affects up to 90% of golfers. The correct approach of the club to the ball is from the inside of the ball to target line. A swing plane that attacks from the inside will result in the ball being struck in a more solid fashion. One of the biggest causes of a slice is swinging the club from outside the target line to inside. If the clubface is square to the target line this results in a ball that starts left and curves to the right. If the clubface is square to the swing path then this will result in a pull shot that goes left and stays left.

Tip 5: A Golf Swing Drill

This is one of my favorite drills to carry out on the range to check my swing path is approaching the ball from the inside. Stand an empty range basket about half a clubs length behind the ball. Take your swing, your club should miss the basket on the backswing and downswing. Put a tee in the ground about 2 inches infront of the ball and the same distance inside the target line. You should miss the tee on your follow through if you are on the correct swing path. Your swing is coming from outside the line to inside if you are striking the basket or tee. If you strike the tee in the ground you are swinging the golf club across the line.

At some point during their golfing career almost every player has looked for a golf slice cure. The golf slice is just about the most annoying issues to deal with for some golfers, but should the causes of why the golf ball slices are clearly understood, the solution is not so difficult.  But before we provide the actions to cure that slice, take several deep breaths and SLOW DOWN your swing.  Almost everything will fall into place if you think three-quarter speed.

The most crucial key that we will contend with to take care of the golf slice is correct swing path.  As your golf swing is circular, that is, the club head begins behind our head, swings about the body and ends up behind our head, it may look like it is physically impossible to not spin the ball.  But at the point of contact don’t think circular.  Allow me to explain.

While looking down on the ball, consider the ball moving in flight.  For the right handed golfer, if the ball is rotating in a clockwise way the ball will slice, or move in the direction toward which the ball is revolving.  Obviously, for the left handed golfer the opposite holds.  The goal to correct the golf slice would be to eliminate this spin.

How can we accomplish this?  If, by looking down on the golf ball, we were to imagine it as being a clock with twelve o’clock being the direction we’d like the ball to go, if we were to produce first contact on the golf ball at seven o’clock striking through the ball to the one o’clock position, we’d impart little spin on the ball,  thus giving the ball a straight flight, or perhaps a slight counter clockwise, or hook spin.

Now undoubtedly this wouldn’t be challenging if not for the fact that we are swinging, to some degree, around the body in to some extent a circular motion.  So just before impact and just after, we should think about the club having a nearly inside out route.  This isn’t as difficult as it seems.  To correct the golf slice, practice undertaking a couple of elements to accomplish this:

1.Close the foot placement somewhat.  In other words, make sure the front foot is a bit closer to the golf ball in comparison to back foot.

2.Position the ball further back in your stance.  Some of us have the tendency to move the ball forward, often even past our front foot, making it extremely difficult to reach that “one o’clock” place on the golf ball. Consistently sticking with those two swing keys will work wonders for the fix the golf slice.  Of course some practice to fine-tune those techniques for your swing will be necessary.

Tip No 3 – Make Sure You Get A Good Hip Turn

Tip number 3 to help you fix a slice would be to make sure you are getting a good hip turn through out the golf swing. When you take the golf club back focus on making a complete turn with the hips. When you start the downswing try and rotate your hips through the golf ball. If you can get a good hip turn through out the swing it will allow you to get through the ball at impact keeping the club face from being open.

A great way to accomplish this really is to think about finishing high with the golf club after making impact with the golf ball. By training the body to finish high, which causes the hips to turn completely will help alleviate the rights on your shots getting you closer to prevent slicing the golf ball.

Tip No 4 – Keep Your Swing Smooth

The fourth key to fix a slice with your golf swing is to try not to get to quick through out the swing. What does this mean? Well probably the largest reasons a golfer can’t correct a slice is because everything they do is way to quick. From the very first move on the back swing to over swinging on the down swing. To be able to have a good swing you will need to be smooth and relaxed through out.

A good way to work on this is at the driving range before you start a round. Try and allow yourself sometime before you play and hit about 20 golf balls with just your wedge and work on taking the club back slow and swing through the golf ball smoothly. Picture in your head one of your favorite golfers. When I do that drill I try and think of guys like Fred Couples or Ernie Els. If you have ever watched their swings they look like they hardly even make an effort to hit the golf ball. That is because they are in good rhythm and have absolutely great timing when the club hits the ball.

Therefore the moral is work on being smooth and your timing will follow!

Tip No 5 – Keep Your Head Still

Last but not least one of your main reason you could be having trouble learning how to fix a slice is because your head is moving everywhere during your swing. I know you’ve probably heard this a thousand times but it’s true. If you can’t see the club hit the ball you’ll always struggle with hitting it. If your head is moving during the swing there’s a good chance your head could possibly be flying out to quickly causing the body and shoulders to be opening up to quickly. If this is the case the club face at impact will be open and you can’t do anything but hit a golfing slice.

So bottom line is make sure that when you start your swing you concentrate on the back of the ball and after the swing keep your head still and try and watch the club face make impact with that spot on the ball you are focusing on. You’ll be amazed at how this can improve your swing and allow you to stop slicing a golf ball.

Strengthen your grip – sometimes the club is not returned back to the ball in the same position that it was at address try strengthening your grip by rotating your grip clockwise around the grip. Rotate the grip until the ‘V’ between thumb and forefinger should point towards the right shoulder with 2 to 3 knuckles of the left hand showing.

Relax your grip – if you are gripping the club tightly it can restrict the action of the wrists, arms and shoulders in the hitting area. Keep your grip light and relaxed, just enough to prevent the club flying out of your hands when making the golf swing. This allows the club to rotate back to the square position during the downswing.

If the ball starts off left of target before curving to the right (for righthanders) then you certainly have a swing fault. At the top of the swing the club should be above the right shoulder pointing towards the target, this can be caused by a failure to turn the upper body during the backswing. Aim to turn the shoulders through 90 degrees on the backswing.

A flatter or more rounded swing will allow the toe of the club to rotate and catch up with the heel of the clubface to return to the ball square. Swinging the club with the arms only can also be major fault.

Stop flailing that elbow – do you suffer from a flailing right elbow? A good training drill is to place the cover of tour driver under the right armpit and concentrate on keeping it there throughout the swing until you are into the follow through.

Instead of heading straight for where we aimed, it takes on the characteristics of a Frisbee and slices off to the right into some form of roughage. Fortunately, we may be able to fix this with a minimum of fuss.

Let’s start with the basics. What is a slice. It is perhaps the most common of golf problems. It occurs when one tries to drive the ball. The ball will usually take off to the side your body is on when striking the ball and then start bending off to the opposite side. Slices are actually a tactical shot for the professionals on certain holes, but most of us are just making a mistake when hitting them.

The first step to fixing the slice is to think about baseball. If you watch baseball, you’ll see someone strike out. The announcer will state that this occurred because the batter did not keep their shoulder in. As a result, they rotated their body too quickly and had a pull stroke. This is also the most common reason for slicing the golf ball. You are either lining up facing to far to the left or are swinging too hard and pulling away from the ball just before striking it. To fix this, try practicing your swing slowly. Turn into the ball and practice just bringing the club down and driving directly through the ball.

There may, however, be a second problem. To drive the ball hard and straight, many people logically assume they need to come up behind the ball. To put this theory into motion, they position the ball to far forward on the tee or stand too far behind it. As a result, the ball is struck as you are coming out of the sweet part of the swing. This results in a pulling motion towards the body and off goes the ball in a beautiful, if unintended, slice. To fix this, try moving your stance forward.

There can be other reasons a player slices the ball, but these tend to be the two most common ones. Adjust for them and you may just be driving the ball where you actually want it to go. Imagine that!
