As a beginning golfer there tends to be some confusion when it comes to selecting the proper golf iron during the course of a round. Without proper club selection your score will add up very quickly and frustration will kick in rather quickly. In this article we will look at the basic mechanics of the golf iron, a method to determine distance and how weather will affect your golf shot.

Every single golf iron in your club set would essentially go the same distance but the angle of the club face changes not only the distance but alters the flight path as well. A typical three iron has a degree angle around twenty one which encouraged the golf ball to fly at a lower height and for a longer distance. On the opposite end of the spectrum there is the nine iron which is around 41 degrees which will send the ball flying much harder and not as far as lowered numbered clubs.

For a beginner golfer the best way to figure out your iron distance is to head for the golf range with your five iron. Measure your distance over a series of shots to figure out what your average is. Now for each lower iron add ten yards for example if your five iron averages 150 yards the four iron would average 160 yards and the three iron should travel around 170 yards. For the higher clubs minus ten yards so the six iron is 140 yards and the seven iron is 130 yards and so on. Needless to say this is not a perfect system but is should give you an indicator of your range.

Unfortunately once you have figure out your iron distances there are factors that need to be considered and one of the most important is the weather. If your typical five iron travels 150 yards but if it is traveling into a strong wind the distance is going to be much less due to the high flight path of the ball. Now a decision has to be made and chances are you will want to use a four iron or if the wind is really strong a three iron as both clubs have a lower flight path and will not be as affected by the wind.

The golf irons are known as the scoring irons for a very good reason and as your game improves you will see why they are known by this other name. In the beginning it is important that you develop a swing that is able to be used by all the golf irons in the bag. It should be noted that golf is a game and a wonderful reason to spend time outdoors with friends so appreciate the moment and not on your scorecard.
